Cytogenetic Effects of Monosodium Glutamate on Human Cells in Vitro

Abstract
Human leucocytes were studied for chromosome breakage and other aberration¢¥s in 66, presence of a¢¥ ood- additive, monosodium glutamate, in vitro.
The agent- used in concentrations of 50, 100, 250, 1, 000, 2,500, 5, 000, and 10, 000 micrograms per milliliter of culture medium and the results were compared with those from control cultures. Incidence of chromosome breaks was higher in the experimental groups than in control. These effect was prominent in the concentration of 250 micrograms per milliliter or more. The numerical aberrations of the chromosomes were no remarkable difference, but -the higher concentrations of MSG were used, the more cells with aneuploidy were noted.
In the cultures 2,500 micrograms of MSG per milliliter added, remarkable retardation of the cell growth was noted, and in the group of 5, 000 micrograms of MSG or more per milliliter cells grew rarely.
